Assessment Belief Statements
As I have taken a closer look at assessment, I begun to think about the way I will choose to use assessment in my classroom. I believe the purpose of assessment is providing evidence of students' learning. Assessments should be used in the classroom as a way of determining the level of a student's mastery of learning targets and allowing the teacher to formatively check in on students' knowledge and understanding throughout the learning process. As a teacher, I believe in using the appropriate form of assessment to measure learning. Assuring assessments properly match the learning targets they are assessing will lead to purposeful and effective assessment. Using formative assessment, paired with direct and timely feedback, offers students with a chance to continue to improve upon their learning and provides teachers with the opportunity to check students' understanding or adjust future instruction. Purposely using summative assessments presents students with a final opportunity to demonstrate their learning and understanding. I believe frequent, formative assessments are helpful in the learning process. "The regular use of formative assessment can better inform teachers and students in relation to a given learning outcome." (Godbout & Richard, 2000) As formative assessments provide feedback and a response to learning, the learner is able to use this information to enhance their understanding, seek clarification on unknown or confusing elements of the content being learned, and guide the direction of the learning to come.
