Grading Belief Statements
Grades are used in the classroom to convey the level of a student's mastery of the learning targets. I believe grades should be Standards-Based. All grades from assessments should be explicitly connected to a learning target and a standard; this ensures all academic grades are completely based on academic achievement of the learning standards. I believe in individual grades. Such a grade reflects the personal achievement of a specific student. For this reason, group grades given to multiple students will not be used in my classroom, as such grades do not convey the learning of an individual student. I believe grades are earned by the student, not given by the teacher. Grades directly reflect a student's learning and mastery of the learning targets. Teachers should not give poor grades as a punishment, not should they reward students with good grades for reasons other than academic achievement. Students earn their grades through mastery of the learning targets.
