Summative Assessment Expansion
Blueprint for Summative Assessment
To guide the creation of the unit's summative assessment, which is a unit test with both selected response and written response answers, I created a Summative Assessment Blueprint. The Blueprint aligns each learning target with the assessment method used on the unit test.

Answer Key and Rubric for Unit Test
Scoring and Grading Plan for Summative Assessment
- I, the teacher, will score the unit test, using the answer key and appropriate rubric. The unit test will be scored and graded in a timely manner, and returned to students with clear, direct feedback as quickly as possible. This will provide students with valuable feedback, which will guide their learning.
- Data will be collected from students’
achievement of the 9 learning targets covered by the assessment. This data will be used to direct future
lessons. If the majority of the
class is struggling to meet proficiency, I will give a review of the concepts
and material I find students are having the mostly difficulty with, based upon
my data analysis.
- A score of 3 or higher will be considered proficiency. The grade from this assessment will contribute to the students’ grade in the appropriate content area (Science for the 8 earth science Learning Targets and Language Arts for the 1 writing Learning Target).
- Low scoring students (under proficiency, scoring a 2 or lower) or other students not reaching mastery at the discretion of the teacher will receive intervention in the form of review of content in small groups. In groups no larger than five students, a teacher or aid will provide remedial instruction. After interventions have occurred, students will be permitted to retake the unit test and the higher score will be recorded.
For high scoring students (scoring a 3.5 or above) or other students who have meet proficiency at the discretion of the teacher will be provided with enrichment opportunities to extend their learning. - Students will receive a returned copy of their assessment once it has been score and marked with clear feedback. With the use of an online grade book, students will be able to view their test score along with the scores of other evaluated assessments. This will allow students to see a current, updated list of all graded assignments.
- Outcomes of the assessment will be known by the teacher and communicated with students, parents, as well as other grade level teachers.
Students will receive a returned copy of their test with feedback. Grades can be entered into online grade book, which allows parents to view the grades of their child. Also parents of low scoring students will be notified of interventions via phone call or email along with notification of ways to assist their child’s learning at home. Other grade level teachers may also have access to the grades of the class (grades will not be attached to a specific student’s identification, but will be viewed anonymously). With this data, grade level teachers will be able to compare students' mastery levels in each class and the associated successful instructional strategies to better prepare for future instruction.
Summative Assessment Samples
I have created graded samples of the unit test for a high, medium, and low performing student. Each sample is graded on a four point scale and had been provided with feedback for the student.
